With the warm summer months right around the corner, families will likely be spending more time outdoors.  Unfortunately, there are often some uninvited guests that may crash the pool party or barbeque – mosquitoes, ticks, ants and fleas can disrupt the fun; spreading serious health risks to you and your loved ones.

These pests can transmit West Nile virus, Lyme disease, pneumonia and tapeworm. According to Orkin, consumer inquiries for fleas and ticks have more than doubled nationally compared to this time last year.

You can protect yourself and your family this season by following these simple prevention tips from Orkin:

Empty standing water from gutters and downspouts and move plant pots away from the home’s foundation to eliminate nesting areas for pests.

  • Replace outdoor lights with yellow bulbs that are less attractive to mosquitoes.
  • Do not feed pets outdoors, and be sure to pick up pet food at night to eliminate food sources for pests.
  • Before stepping outside, spray an EPA-approved insect repellent on exposed skin. When outdoors near woodlands, fields and areas with shrubbery and tall grass, wear long sleeves and socks if possible.
