Giuliana Rancic, who was diagnosed with breast cancer while undergoing a mammogram that was required as part of her IVF treatments, has said that she will opt for a double mastectomy.
Giuliana Rancic, 36, decided to move forward with the surgery after previous lumpectomies failed to completely remove the cancer from one breast.
“For me, it was very important to just get the cancer out,” said Rancic.
Rancic said she was encouraged to move forward with the double mastectomy after seeing the successful result of a friend’s reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy. She also said the support of her husband, Bill Rancic, was crucial in her decision.
“Bill said to me, ‘I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid,’ ” she said. “He said, ‘I don’t care what you look like, I don’t care about the physical portion of this. I just need you around for the next 50 years. So, let’s just get you healthy.’ And that certainly helped me come to a decision.”
The E! News star said she another reason she opted against having another lumpectomy, which would involve radiation and a lengthy round of medication, because Rancic is hoping to start trying for children relatively soon. She also has much lower odds against the cancer returning (less than 1%) with a double mastectomy.
“At the end, to be honest, all it came down to was just choosing to live, and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life,” Rancic said.
