Russell Brand and Katy Perry Divorce: Did They Both Want Children?

Russell Brand and Katy Perry have decided to end their year-long marriage together, but many people are wondering just what went wrong.

Russell Brand, 36, and Katy Perry, 27, who were married in India Oct. 23, 2010 after a one year romance, met at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, which Brand was hosting. The two seemed to be a perfect couple: funny, talented, and both wanted children in the near future.

Just one month ago, Katy Perry told Barbara Walters that she definitely wanted children with Russell Brand. “I think that is one of the big reasons why you do get married,” she said, adding that her marriage to the comedian was “lovely so far.” Despite divorce rumors around that time, Russell Brand echoed the same sentiment on the Ellen DeGeneres show, saying: “‘I’m really happily married. I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive.’

Apparently, something went wrong between now and then. Russell Brand filed for divorce on Dec. 30, citing “irreconcilable differences.” So, what went wrong? Sources close to the couple claim that Brand, who is a recovering addict, did not approve of Katy Perry’s “partying” or her circle of friends, which includes such famous singers as Rihanna.

Us Weekly reported that Perry and Brand, who did not have a prenup, had “a massive fight” just before the holiday, and while sources say they had discussed the possibility of a divorce, Katy Perry might have been taken off guard at the quick filing. However, other sources say that Brand submitted the divorce papers at the request of Perry, who did not want to upset her parents.

In the meantime, Brand, who is worth an estimate $14 million to Katy Perry’s $44 million, might walk away with $20 million from the divorce.

We’ll be waiting to hear the real story as to what went wrong with this A-list couple.
