Your First Week of Breastfeeding

Day 2

Today, your baby might get hungry. Really hungry.

“You may have just nursed and be thinking, ‘He can’t possibly be hungry,’ but if he acts hungry, he is hungry,” says Smillie. The seemingly insatiable hunger during the first week of breastfeeding is partially due to your newborn’s tiny stomach, which is only about the size of a shooter marble, says Amber McCann, I.B.C.L.C., a lactation consultant for the Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh.

The transition from the womb can be tough, too. “Before that baby was born, they were on a 24 hour drip of nutrition, so it’s very normal for babies to want to feed as often as 8 to 12 times a day,” says McCann.
