Pregnancy Beauty Tip #1: Clean up your mani/pedi
Unsterilized footbaths or equipment, or cutting or pushing back cuticles can put you at risk for nasty bacterial infections. Your new game plan? Hit the salon first thing in the morning before other customers have had the chance to use the equipment, and bring your own nail instruments, says Melissa Schweiger, author of Belli Beautiful: The Essential Guide to the Safest Health and Beauty products for Pregnancy, Mom and Baby. If your salon has disposable liners at the pedicure stations, use them; otherwise, always ask the nail technician to re-sanitize the equipment.
Another thing: While there’s no direct evidence that says occasionally using nail polish is unsafe for your baby, most polishes do contain toxic chemicals that are linked to hormone disruption. The safest bet? Stick with polishes by OPI, Essie, and Sally Hansen, which are free of the offenders.
