For toddlers, aged 1-6

This healthful comfort food calls for Jonagold apples. Others that make excellent applesauce: McIntosh, Gala, Crispin and Cortland.

Time: 20 minutes

Recipe:
In a large saucepan, bring to a boil 1⁄2-inch chunks of 3 large Jonagold apples, 1⁄4-inch pieces of 1 peeled mango, 1⁄4 cup water and 2 tablespoons apple cider.

Cover and reduce heat to medium for 10 minutes, occasionally stirring and smashing fruit with a potato masher. Stir in 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon minced crystallized ginger and 3⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Cook uncovered 5 more minutes. Cool and serve. Makes about 3 cups (12 1⁄4-cup toddler servings).
