Cold and flu season means more visits to the dreaded pediatrician (unless he gives out lollipops, that is).  And your child might be a bit frightened to see the doctor.  So what’s a mom to do with a sick, scared kid?  Here are 5 tips to help you help your child.

1.  Educate in simple language.  The unknown is scary.  Explain to the best of your abilities (and in kid-friendly language) what your child will experience.  Not sure?  Don’t be afraid to ask the nurse what general procedures might be performed.  And don’t beat the subject into the ground; you might cause more anxiety.

2.  Why so serious?  Be upbeat, positive, and even humorous about the doctor’s visit in order to show your kids that there’s nothing to be frightened of.  Showing, not telling, is very powerful.

3.  Pick the right doctor.  If your doctor isn’t a kid-person, or your child has a particular aversion to her, don’t hestitate to find a new pediatrician.  The more pleasant the doctor, the more pleasant the experience.
