This story is a tearjerker…
Diane Aulger was two weeks away from her due date when her husband, Mark, was told by doctors that he had days to live. Mark Aulger, 51, had been diagnosed with colon cancer last April. Just when the family thought he was getting better, he devloped severe breathing problems. Diane Aulger says doctors told her husband that he had developed pulmonary fibrosis, which causes scarring and thickening in the lungs, from the chemotherapy.
On January 16 doctors told Mark and Diane that he had, at best, four to five days to live. When Mark told his wife Diane, 31, that all he wanted was to see his newborn baby girl, Diane induced labor on January 18.
Baby Savannah was placed in her father’s arms as soon as she was born. Diane said Mark “cried, and he just looked very sad.” his wife said. He held her for 45 minutes, and off and on as he could before slipping into a coma on January 21. He died two days later.
The Aulgers have two other children, ages 10 and 7. Diane Aulger also has a 15-year-old and a 13-year-old.
“We’re living day-to-day as if dad’s still here,” Diane Aulger said. “We know dad is here with us. They talk to dad. Mark was a very funny, funny dad.”
