To register for a class or obtain more information about any of the offerings below, please call Valley’s Parent Education Department at 201-291-6151.  All classes listed below are held at the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus unless otherwise noted. The Sibling Preparation classes are held at The Valley Hospital, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood.

The Valley Hospital has partnered with Destination Maternity to offer Parent Education classes and physician lectures at its Paramus location.  Classes are held at Destination Maternity’s Learning Studio, located at 35 Plaza on Westbound Route 4.

The Ultimate Birthing Experience

No matter how your baby arrives-natural delivery, Caesarean section, induction-the birth of your baby should be an incredible experience.  It is important that you clearly understand the healthcare decisions you will face as you prepare for birth.  This class will give you the tools you need to separate health news from “hype” so you can make healthcare decisions that fit your needs and birth preferences.  Bring your support person: you don’t want to miss this class!

To ensure a spot in the class, please enroll by your 30th week of pregnancy. This class is offered in a five week series, two-day Saturday intensified series, or in a one-time refresher class.

Mondays:  March 16 – April 13 April 27 – June 1

Weekend

This special two-day weekend class is designed for those couples who find it difficult to attend the weekly series.

Refresher
The Refresher class includes a thorough review of labor and delivery.  This one-session class should be completed 4-6 weeks prior to your due date.

Marvelous Multiples®
Become informed early about your multiple pregnancy.  Learn how to get the proper nutrition and ways to reduce the risks of pre-term labor and pregnancy complications.  This three-session prenatal class also focuses on labor, delivery, and adapting to life with multiples.  Classes should be completed by 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Breastfeeding Basics
This one-session class explores the advantages and benefits of breastfeeding and discusses nutrition, positions that are comfortable, common problems, pumping and storage of breast milk, and the correct use of the breast pumping equipment.  Dads are encouraged to attend.  Class should be taken during the seventh to eighth months of pregnancy.

Newborn Care
This one-session class details all the basics of newborn care for expectant parents.  Bathing, diapering, cord care, temperature-taking, and pediatrician intervention are some of the topics covered.  A Valley Hospital pediatrician will be there for a presentation/questions.  Childcare providers are welcome to register.  Class should be taken before the birth of the child.

Infant and Child Safety
Being aware of the many potential hazards to infants and children helps parents provide a safe environment for their child.  Topics covered include car seat safety, poison prevention, childproofing a home, and furniture and toy safety, in addition to other concerns of new parents.  Childcare providers are welcome to register.  This one-session class does not include CPR.  CPR is offered by the Education Department (201-291-6100) at The Valley Hospital.

Fee:  $40 per couple

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
Training CPR courses are offered by the Education Department of The Valley Hospital.  All of the courses take place at Valley’s Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus.  For class information, fees, and to register, please call 201-291-6100.

The Happiest Baby on the Block
Learn the techniques of the world-renowned pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp.  By attending this one-session program, you will learn how his approach “may help prevent breastfeeding failure, postpartum depression, exhaustion, marital stress, and even shaken baby syndrome.  It also helps fathers become more involved with their baby’s care and helps them feel more competent and secure.”  Learning Dr. Karp’s calming techniques will help parents be more confident and help babies be happier and sleep better.

Fee:  $55 per couple

Dads On Duty – No Moms Allowed!
This one-session class will help you enjoy and succeed at the job of a lifetime, being a Dad!  An experienced dad will guide you and give lots of “on-the-job-training” tips.  This class will identify and explain the value of developing and maintaining a strong father/child bond during the formative years of a child’s life.  Dads get together to share concerns about impending fatherhood.

March 10, May 5
7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Fee:  $40 for Dad

Pets and Babies
Expecting a new baby?  Don’t forget about your loving and loyal four-legged first baby, your cat or dog.  There WILL be adjustments to make.  This one-session class will teach expectant parents tried and true methods to a happy home for all family members.  With a little preparation and training, tails will be wagging when your new addition comes home.

March 31, May 19
7 – 9 p.m.
Fee:  $50 per couple

Sibling Class (3-7 yrs.)
Big brothers and big sisters will enjoy this one-session class designed especially for them.  Class activities are age specific and encourage positive feelings about old sibling’s place in the family and the new baby.  Class should be taken about four weeks before baby’s due date.

Fee:  $40-one child; $20 each additional child

Grandparents Class
This one-session course provides information on the most current childbirth practices, child development and childcare, and fosters a better understanding between parents and grandparents.  Topics include newborn care, infant feeding, ways to soothe a crying baby, infant safety, childproofing a home, toys for various ages, and other concerns for new grandparents.

March 12, May 14
7 – 10 p.m.
Fee:  $45 per couple

Babysitters
Preparation This class provides babysitters with the information they need to safely care for a child.  Topics include changing diapers, feeding, holding a baby, infant safety issues, and how to contact emergency personnel such as the police and poison control centers.

This one-session class is for young girls and boys, ages 10-16.

Prenatal Yoga
There are many benefits to practicing yoga during pregnancy.  Through this five-session yoga class, a woman can prepare physically, mentally, and emotionally for giving birth and becoming a mother.  Moms-to-be are led through a wide range of poses adapted for the ever-changing pregnant body.  Call for dates.

Class may start on any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday.

Baby and Me Yoga
This is a five-session yoga class for mothers and their babies, approximately 6 weeks to 1 year of age.  It addresses postpartum conditions such as back strain, weak abdominal wall and pelvic floor, tight shoulders, sleeplessness, and stress.  It helps women regain strength, as well as adapt and grow in their new role as mother.  It is an opportunity to nourish that profound bond with baby.  Class may start on any Monday or Wednesday.

Women’s Health Yoga
Practice the science and art of self-illumination through yoga.  This yoga class addresses the specific needs of a woman’s physiology and can promote your physical, mental, and spiritual health.  For non-pregnant women of all ages. Wednesday 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Toddler Yoga
Using yoga poses, this amusing and active class encourages your toddler’s explorations of the environment around them, all while having you by their side.  Lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and have fun together. Monday 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Prenatal Peace and Calming
Take two hours to learn and experience stress reduction practices optimal for prenatal self care.  Open to women at any point during their pregnancies.  Makes a great baby shower gift!  This relaxing workshop will help women harness their intuition and connect with their growing babies.  This is not a childbirth class, but a short retreat and respite for women to connect with your growing baby.

Speaking of Birth: A Compassionate Conversation Circle for Women
Open to women at any time during their pregnancy through postpartum.  This conversation circle provides a community building experience and rituals to honor motherhood.  Come together one hour a week to meet new moms, share stories and experiences; discuss various topics related to your transition into motherhood.  Facilitated with compassion and ease, this circle will provide an illuminating place to harness your instincts with kindness and support in a loving and nurturing environment.

Birthing Doula
Women have unique physical and emotional needs during childbirth.  In addition to the safety of your modern obstetrical care team, and the love and companionship provided by your partner, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement, and respect.  A doula is a woman who supports the birthing mother and her partner throughout labor and delivery to help her have a more satisfying birthing experience.  Please discuss this option with your healthcare provider or call the Parent Education Department.

Speak Up When You’re Down
This new mothers’ support group meets every other week and is facilitated by a clinical social worker.  Discussion centers on issues concerning postpartum depression:  when love and support are not enough and when symptoms last longer than two weeks or affect a woman’s ability to enjoy her daily life.

Breastfeeding Support Group
This complimentary support group is held each week at Valley’s Dorothy B. Kraft Center.
Thursdays

Lactation Center
We offer private lactation consultations by appointment.  The newest line of Medela breast pumps are available to rent or purchase, as well as Medela accessories.

What is Cord Blood Banking?
This one-session class will discuss the topic of cord blood banking which is the collection and storage of the stem cells found in your newborn’s umbilical cord.  Today, cord blood stem cells have been used successfully in the treatment of over 70 life-threatening diseases.  When you bank your baby’s cord blood, you are making a choice that could potentially provide a lifesaving treatment for your child or a family member.  There is only one chance to collect your child’s cord blood, find out if it is right for your family.

Learn to take fabulous photos of your baby.

April 2 – Prevent Baby Burnout
Will discuss how to eat right, stay in shape and have fun during your pregnancy & with baby.

May 7 – Baby Scrap Booking
Start your baby’s book.  Learn how to reserve, present pictures in an album or other methods.

Birth, Baby & Beyond Luncheons
Located at the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus N.J. 07652 from 12-1:30 p.m. lunch is provided.  The cost is $30.00

March 19 – Going Green
Learn simple ways to give your baby the most natural foods, lotions and remedies.

April 23 – Baby Sign Language
Learn the benefits of communicating with baby before they can use words.

May 21 – Sleep Training
Fostering healthy sleep routines at any age.  Fail safe techniques that any mom can master.
