- Give her some control over the experience. Allow her to pick out toys to bring to a caretaker’s house or an activity that she and the caretaker will do together.
- Be kind and reassuring. Emphasize that you will return and that she will be well cared for by the caretaker or schoolteachers. Don’t deny her sadness, but keep your tone loving and light.
- Always say goodbye. Get down to your child’s level and give her a warm hug and kiss goodbye. Remind her of some fun activities you’ll do together when you return. And it’s best to depart promptly after saying goodbye—don’t prolong things by saying goodbye and not leaving.
